Rhodes is definitely in a degree of wrongness, but the story states that she was returning his kisses, that she was at least partly in consent. It is such a grey area, and the fact that these girls were presenting themselves as objects of sexual desire. The skinny dipping comment stuck with me; they were attempting to endear themselves to their companions.
The signals were no doubt unintentional, but they were nonetheless there. In today’s bar culture, in today’s pancake makeup and reality-show bitchery, it’s hard to know where to draw the line between rape and an honest mistake. I am not claiming that the rapist was in the right, but I will suggest that all parties are responsible for the outcome.
